A collection of a cell phone ring tones usually sells for $18.80, but it is on sale for $10.34. What is the percent discount?

10.34/18.80 = x/100

Cross multiply

18.80x = 1034

Divide by 18.80 on both sides

x = 55

Now, subtract 55 from 100 since you're trying to find the amount discounted

100 - 55

Simplify

45%

And that's your answer :)

Very nice, saseflower......here's one more method :

 

% Discount   =  (  [ Old Price - New Price] / [Old Price] x 100 ) %  .....so....in this case, we have

 

( [18.80 - 10.34] / [ 18.80]  x 100) %  =

 

( .45 x 100 ) %  =

 

45%
