you can subtract the two equations, like so:

4x+8y-(-10x+8y) = 40-(-44)

simplifying:

4x+8y+10x-8y = 40+44

14x = 84

x = 6

4(6)+8y = 40

24+8y = 40

8y = 40 - 24

8y = 16

y = 2

hope this helped! please correct me if i am wrong:)

-10x +8y=-44

4x+8y=40

First, let's subtract these two equations

If we do that we get:

-14x=-84

divide both sides by -14

x=6

We can now plug in x=6 in either of the two equations. I'll plug it into the second one

4(6) + 8y = 40

24+8y=40

-24        -24

8y= 16

---    ----

8       8

Y=2
