Solve for y:
-2 = 2 y^2-4 y-5

-2 = 2 y^2-4 y-5 is equivalent to 2 y^2-4 y-5 = -2:
2 y^2-4 y-5 = -2

Divide both sides by 2:
y^2-2 y-5/2 = -1

Add 5/2 to both sides:
y^2-2 y = 3/2

Add 1 to both sides:
y^2-2 y+1 = 5/2

Write the left hand side as a square:
(y-1)^2 = 5/2

Take the square root of both sides:
y-1 = sqrt(5/2) or y-1 = -sqrt(5/2)

Add 1 to both sides:
y = 1+sqrt(5/2) or y-1 = -sqrt(5/2)

Add 1 to both sides:
Answer: |y = 1+sqrt(5/2)    or    y = 1-sqrt(5/2)
