8 - x < 2   U  3x ≤ 9

 

For the first add x to both sides and subtract 2 from both sides

 

6 < x    or  x > 6

 

For the second, divide both sides by 3

 

x ≤ 3

 

So, in interval notation, the answers are

 

( - infinity , 3 ] U (6 , infinity )
