x^2 = 5(x + 100)       distribute the 5 across the terms in the parentheses

x^2 = 5x + 500         subtract the terms on the right from both sides

x^2 - 5x - 500 = 0     factor

(x - 25) (x + 20) = 0   set each factor to 0

x = 25    or   x = -20
