PLease help me understand this with the substitution method. 

 

y=-5x-17

-3x-3y=3

 

can you please find x and y. I got x=4.25 and y=3 can you please tell me what I did wrong.

OK,,   SUBSTITUTION method

The FIRST equation tells you what  y =     Substitue this value of y in to the 2nd equation....

 

-3x - 3 (-5x-17) =3    and solve for 'x'......

                then use this value of 'x' that you find and substitute back into EITHER of the equations to find the 'y' value

 

-3x + 15x +51 = 3

12x + 51 = 3

12x = -48

x = - 4            y =  -5(-4)-17

                          y = 3
