If I give my brother 5 dollars, then we will have the same amount of money. If instead he gives me 25 dollars, then I'll have twice as much money as he will have. How much money does my brother currently have (in dollars)?

Let's set variables. You will be x, and your brother will be y.

x-5=y+5

x+25=2(y-25)

So, we can conclude:

x=y+10

x+25=2y-50

x=2y-25

y+10=2y-25

y=2y-15

y=15

So, your brother has $15.

Not bad, but a simple arithmetic mistake did you in.

Actually, there are two mistakes, both subtraction.

So, we can conclude:

x=y+10

x+25=2y-50

x=2y-25                              x  =  2y – 75

y+10=2y-25               y + 10  =  2y – 75

y=2y-15                             y  =  2y – 85

y=15                                –y  =  –85

                                          y  =  85

So, your brother has $85.
