Find the dimensions of the rectangle of maximum area that can be constructed with a perimeter of 44cm.

 

I tried using Google for help, but common methods used were derivatives which I haven't been taught yet. I'm a little lost, so an explanation would be helpful! :)

It can be shown that the area will be  maximized when each side of the rectangle is equal to the perimeter / 4....in essence the rectangle will be a square

 

So...each side will  =  44/ 4  =  11 cm

 

And the maximum area is   11^2  =  121 cm^2
