I need help understanding what to do with 1= x/5 + 3

I tried adding -3 to the positive 3 then to the positive . I got a 0 on 3 + -3 while on 1 + -3 I got a -2. Now I'm confused on what else I should do to the x/5.

1= (x/5) + 3   just subtract 3 from both sides

1 - 3 =x/5

-2 = x/5           cross multiply

x = -2 x 5

x = -10
