How do you solve 9x+1/2y=51 and 7x+1/3y=39 using substitution?

9x+1/2y=51

7x+1/3y=39

There are several ways to do this......here's my approach

Multiply the top equation by 2 and the bottom by 3......this gives us.....

18x + y  = 102       (1)

21x + y  = 117      (2)

Rearranging (1)  we have    y = 102 - 18x   .......now.....put this into (2) for y

21x + [102 - 18x]  = 117  simplify

3x + 102  = 117     subtract 102 from each side

3x = 15                 divide by 3

x = 5

And, using y = 102 - 18(x) , we have......y = 102 - 18(5)  = 102 - 90   = 12

So....(x, y) = (5, 12)

cool cool cool
