since it's 3500m and the difference is 975m the answer is actually 2525m. all you have to do is get a piece of paper and write it out.

3500m above the water PLUS 975m below the water makes 3500m + 975m

Alternatively difference means take away. The big one take away the little one.

3500 - (- 975) = 3500 - - 975 = 3500 + 975.
