We are adding 2 to every successive term....so a1 =   a0  + 2 =     -1 + 2  = 1

I think you're confused about the "formula"

We have

an  = a(n - 1)  + 2

So.....a1   =  a(1-1) + 2   =   a0  + 2    =    -1  + 2   = 1
