Suppose  

 

$\frac {x}{y} = \frac {4}{7}$

and 

 

$\frac {y}{z} = \frac {14}{3}$

. What is the value of 

 

$\frac {x + y}{z}$

? Express your answer as a common fraction.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean....but I think you have....

 

x / y =  4 / 7    and   y / z =   14 / 3

 

Note that the first fraction can also be expressed as  x / y =  8 / 14

 

So

 

[x + y ] / z  =   [8 + 14 ] / 3   =  22 / 3
