\({5}^{3}\)      in this example '3' is an exponent....it is the number of time to multiply '5' by itself    5 x 5 x 5

 

\({a}^{4}\)      4 is the exponent......this means  a x a x a x a 

 

\((x+2)^3 \)     '3' is the exponent   this means  (x+2)  x  (x+2)  x  (x+2)
