how do you find the axis of symmetry from y = (x-9)(x+5)?

You can tell from the factors that the parabola crosses the x-axis at +9 and –5.

The axis of symmetry is the vertical line halfway between these two crossings.

The axis of symmetry, i.e., the line halfway between (–5,0) and (+9,0), is x = 2
