Systems of Equations Word Problems

Flying to Kampala with a tailwind a plane averaged 158km/h. On the return trip the plane only averaged 112km/h while flying back into the same wind. Find the speed of the wind and the speed of the plane in still air.

Add 158 + 112 and divide by 2 = 270 / 2 = 135km/h  ...and this is the speed in still air....

Now....with the wind they travel 23km/hr faster and, against the wind, the plane travels 23km/hr slower

So, the wind speed must have been 23km/hr
