Say you want to find the highest common factor of 36 and and 24
The pairs of numbers that make 36 are 1x36,2x18,3x12,4x9,6x6 and that's it
when I write factors down, I do them in pairs like this but I write them down in a different order I'll try to explain
1.....................................................................36
.....2...........................................................18
.........3.................................................12
................4..................................9
........................6,6 But we only want one 6 Now I know I have all ot them
So I've written the little factors from left to right, and the big ones from right to left
factors of 36 = 1,2,3,4,6,9,12,18,36
factors of 24 = 1,2,3,4,6,8,12,24
the biggest number that is in both lists is 12. You should put a circle around it.
therefore the highest common factor of 24 and 36 is 12.
