Well, if he added 54 to get 26, that turns into an equation with one variable, which you specified as \(a\) 

 

He added 54 to get 26, so \(a+54=26\)

 

Subtract 54 from both sides to get \(a+54-54=26-54\) , or simply \(a=-28\) .
