The elephant's weight increased by 8% after it walked through the peanut field. If it gained 80 pounds, how much did it weigh before it walked through the peanut field?

Let's call the elephant's weight before walking through the field = x.

So we have

x + 80 = 1.08x    subtract x from both sides

.08x  = 80            divide both sides by  .08

x = 1000 lbs

100 divided by 8 times 12.5 equals 1000lbs before going into the field.
