The linear profit equation for a company that sells plastic airtight containers is P = a + bx, where P is the profit in Rands, X is the number of units sold, a and b are constants. When 100 units are sold, the profit is R21000 and when 450 units are sold, the profit is R126000.

Determine the values of a and b

21,000= a + 100b, where a=21,000 - 100b

126,000= a + 450b, we substitute,

126,000=21,000 - 100b +450b

126,000 - 21,000=350b

105,000=350b

b=105,000/350

b=300 and a=-9,000

21000 = a + 100b                    (1)

126000 = a + 450b                  (2)

Subtract (1) from (2)

105000 = 350b

Divide by 350

b = 300

Put this back into (1)

21000 = a +100*300

a = -9000
