The macneils rented a moving truck for $49.95 plus $.30 per mile it is driven. Before returning the truck they refiled the gas tank for $18.32 The total cost was $95.87 How many miles did they go?
I honestly need help on solving this because I dont know how to find the number of miles....If you could maybe help by explaing how you got an answer?
they had to replace the petrol that the used $18.32
and they had to pay an initial amount of 49.95
so far that is $${\mathtt{49.95}}{\mathtt{\,\small\textbf+\,}}{\mathtt{18.32}} = {\frac{{\mathtt{6\,827}}}{{\mathtt{100}}}} = {\mathtt{68.27}}$$
Now they also had to pay 30 cents (0.3 dollars) for every mile that they drove.
Say they drove M miles this would be 0.3M dollars
so we have
68.27+0.3M = 95.87
subtract 68.27 from both sides
0.3M = 27.60
divide both sides by 0.3
M=92miles
They drove 92 miles
