The monthly demand for garlic sold by the Sighisoara Softneck Garlic Cooperative is known to be normally distributed with a mean of 12190 bulbs and a standard deviation of 251 bulbs. How many bulbs must the Cooperative have in stock at the start of the month in order that there be only a 1.1% chance of running out of stock by the end of the month. [You may assume that no further supplies of garlic are available during the month.]

Express your answer correct to the nearest integer.

The online normal distribution calculator at http://stattrek.com/online-calculator/normal.aspx should enable you to answer this.

Hi Alan

I still don't get quite how to use it - can you help?

Enter the following data:

normal 1

Press the calculate button to fill in the top box

normal 2

There must be 11615 bulbs in stock.

The normal distribution with mean 12190 and standard deviation 251 has 1.1% (0.011) of its area below 11615.

Thank you - I really appreciate this - Can you help me with the other question because that was the most complicated one or show me the formula.

I got the answer -0.620 but I am not confident this is correct,

In the testing phase of golf b***s, manufacturers generate robot controlled shots and analyse the results of such shots by the flight distance which is measured to a high accuracy.

It was found that the mean length of a large number of robot controlled shots using the Titleist Pro V1x golf ball is 229.424 metres and the standard deviation is 15.953 metres.Assuming that the lengths are normally distributed, find the proportion of robot controlled shots that measure between 224 and 265 metres. Supply your answer correct to three decimal places.

For this one you first need to enter 265 in the top box and leave the second box empty then press calculate to get:

prob1

Now clear the second box and enter 224 in the top box and press calculate to get:

prob 2

Take the difference between 0.98713 and 0.36693 to get the required proportion; namely 0.620 (to 3 dp).

Thank you so much - I know what I did wrong now.

I put the numbers in back to front and that is why I had -0.620 as opposed to 0.620.

I really appreciate all your help and thank you for your patience and for showing me the best way to work it out,
