The polynomial y^3 + y^2 +my - 7 has the same remainder when it is divided by either y-1 or y+1. What is the remainder?

Using synthetic divsion, we have.:

-1 [  1  1  m    - 7  ]                             1 [  1  1     m           -7 ]

          -1  0    -m                                           1     2          m + 2

      ___________                                 ___ ____________

       1 0   m  ( -7 - m)                               1   2   (m + 2)   (  m - 5 )

So     

-7 - m     =    m - 5

-2   =   2m

-1  = m

So..... the remainder  is     (-1 - 5)  =  -6
