The probability of snow for each of the next three days is $\frac{3}{4}$. What is the probability that it will not snow at all during the next three days? Express your answer as a common fraction.

3/4 *3/4 *3/4  = 27/64    this is the proabability that is DOES snow every day.

1-27/64 = 37/64             this is the proabability that is DOES NOT snow EVERY day.

1/4 is the prob that is DOES NOT snow on any individual day

1/(4^3) = 1/64               IS the probability that is does not snow AT ALL for the 3 days.

Sorry Mellie but the answer that you have is NOT correct.

Correction, it is just as correct as CPhill answer - it its the question that must be wrong!!!

Could it be 37/64? Because each of the three days?

Probability of no snow on 1st day = 1/4

P(no snow 1st day AND no snow 2nd day AND no snow 3rd day)

= 1/4 x 1/4 x 1/4

= 1/64

Mellie....I'm assuming that the probability is (3/4) each day.....

So   (3/4) ^3 = 27/64

So.....the probability that it will not snow at all = [ 1 - 27/64 ]  =[ 64/64  - 27/64 ] = 37/64

I think your second answer looks good......!!!!

Chris, you  have found that probability that it will not snow every day.

Badinage has hound the probability that it will not snow on any day.

So

I am with Badinage on this one :))

Good work Badinage

It would be 3/4*3/4*3/4 for each of the three days. So the denominator would be the total. You subtract the numerator from the denominator because you want the opposite of the info they gave you.

> The probability of snow for each of the next three days is 3/4

If we denote the probability of snow on any one day as P(S) then in my working I interpreted the above statement to mean P(S) = 0.75

HOWEVER, it is possible that the 3/4 probability is actually the probability of three consecutive days of snow, i.e., of no snow-free days,

so P(S)*P(S)*P(S) = 3/4

making P(S) = cube_root(0.75) ≈ 0.9086

Therefore, P(no snow) * P(no snow) * P(no snow)

= (1 - cube_root(0.75))^3

This is approx 0.0007645

These are the only 2 interpretations I would entertain.
