The stewardess has a suitcase that measures 26 inches high not including the attached handle, x. I her hand is about 30 inches from the floor with an angle of elevation of 45°, how long is the handle?

Find this by using the definition of sine;

sin(45°)=30/(26 + L)   where L is the length of the handle

sin(45°) is 1/√2 so  1/√2 = 30/(26 + L)

Rearrange:

(26 + L)/√2 = 30

26 + L = 30*√2

L = 30*√2 - 26 ≈ 16.4 inches
