Let the smaller integer = x     and the larger one is 2x + 4    ...and we have

x + 2x + 4 = 31    simplify and subtract 4 from both sides

3x  = 27      divide both sides by 3

x = 9    that's the smaller integer

And 2(9) + 4  = 18 + 5 = 22      that's the larger integer
