Let x be the first number and y be the second number    ...   so we have

x + y  = 27

x - y  =   5            Adding the equations, we have

2x = 32                Dividing through by 2, we have

x = 16                  And substituting  or x in the first equation, we have

16 + y  = 27         Subtract 16 from both sides  

y = 11
