The width of a rectangle is 7 less than twice the length.  If the perimeter of the rectangle is 43.6 inches, what is the area of the rectangle?

W = 2L  - 7

Perimeter =  2(W + L)    ......so we have

43.6 = 2 ( 2L - 7 + L )

43.6  = 2 (3L - 7)

43.6 = 6L -14     add 14 to both sides

57.6  = 6L    divide both sides by 6

9.6  = L

W = 2(9.6))  - 7   = 12.2

Area = L x W  .....so........   (9.6) (12.2)   = 117.12 square units

cool cool cool
