A large community college has professors and lecturers. The total number of faculty members is 228. The school reported that it had 5 professors for every 14 lecturers. How many of each type of faculty member does the community college employ?

The 228  is divided into 19 parts, each consisting of 5  professors and 14 lecturers....so....

Professors =  (5/19) * 228  = 60

And the Lecturers  must =   228 - 60   =  168

Add up the ratio of professors and lecturers together: 5 + 14 =19

5/19 x 228 =60 professors

14/19 x 228 =168 lecturers.

Sorry.......I meant to say that there were 12 parts  of 228 consisting of 19 people each

An easier way of looking at it is that for each of these 12 parts there were 5 professors.....

.....so....12 * 5   = 60

And for each of the 12 parts there are 14 lecturers  ....so....12 * 14 = 168

I hope that is a little better.....
