Translate into an algebraic equation and solve.  If four is added to 3 times a certain number, the result is 40. What is that certain number?

So

4 + 4 + 4 + N = 40  or, algebraically.....

3(4) + N = 40

12 + N = 40    subtract 12 from both sides

N = 28

And that's the number.....
