Two graphs are drawn that belong with the family of functions with the function notation f(x) = a + √x-1

a. Which value of a belongs to/gives you graph 1

b. Which translation do you have to apply to get graph 2 from graph 1

c. A graph from the family of graphs goes through the point (17, -8). Which translation do you have to apply to get this graph from graph 1

f(x)  =   a +  √ (x-1 )

a.       This is the basic graph of √ (x-1)   shifted up 3 units.....so....a  = 3

b.        Graph 2  is Graph 1 shifted down 5 units

c.      We have that

shift + [ 3 +√ (17 - 1)] =  - 8

shift + [ 3 + 4 ] = -8

shift + 7  = -8

shift  = -15

We need to  shift Graph 1 down 15 units to produce the point (17, -8)
