If the ratio of the hypotenuse of two isosceles right triangles are 1:2, what is the ratio of the areas?

The larger triangle will be  (scale factor)^2  times as large as the smaller triangle

 

The scale factor is 2...so....the larger triangle will be (2)^2  =  4 times as large
