If tan (x) = 1/2 and csc(x) < 0, then find cos(x).

If tan is positive     then  sin and cos are positive (Quadrant I )    or   both are negative (quadrant III)

   if csc (which equals 1/sin)   is negative   then cos must be negative also

 

arctan (1/2) = 26.565   degrees     or    206.565 degrees       cos = -.8944
