lighthouse B is 6.56 miles directly east of lighthouse A. A ship at O observer that A is due north and that the bearing of OB is N 46 degrees 10' E. how far is the ship from A? from B?

From A.......we know a side (6.56)   and an opposite angle = 46°10'  = [46 + 1/6]°

And OA  is the  adjacent side   [ the distance from O to A ]......so we have

 

tan[46 + 1/6] = 6.56 / OA   solve for OA

 

OA = 6.56 / tan [ 46 + 1/6]  = about 6.3 miles

 

From B.....this will be the hypotenuse of a right triangle

 

We can use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve this

 

OB   = sqrt [  6.56^2 + 6.3^2 ]   = about 9.1 miles
