lighthouse B is 6.56 miles directly east of lighthouse A. A ship at O observer that A is due north and that the bearing of OB is N 46 degrees 10' E. how far is the ship from A? from B?
From A.......we know a side (6.56) and an opposite angle = 46°10' = [46 + 1/6]°
And OA is the adjacent side [ the distance from O to A ]......so we have
tan[46 + 1/6] = 6.56 / OA solve for OA
OA = 6.56 / tan [ 46 + 1/6] = about 6.3 miles
From B.....this will be the hypotenuse of a right triangle
We can use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve this
OB = sqrt [ 6.56^2 + 6.3^2 ] = about 9.1 miles
