Actually, it also depends on which system you use. Where I come from (Norway), the next number in the sequence is trilliard. That is because in continental Europe and Latin America, one usually use "the long scale", while in USA, the short scale is used. Whenever I read large numbers in an English text, I have to "translate" it from the short scale, back into the long scale that I use. To be honest, that can be a pain in the neck, and quiet a bit confusing:
When I read "billion" I translate it into "milliard"
When I read "trillion" I translate it into "billion"
When I read "quadrillion" I translate it into "billiard"
When I read "quintillion" I translate it into "trillion"
As you might have noticed, numbers such as "billion" means different things depending on whether the long - or the short scale is used!
