E as in $$E=mc^2$$ refers to energy
but little $$e$$ often refers to a special irrational number that is approximately equal to 2.718281828.....
This number has special properties just like $$\pi$$ has. $$e\:\: and\:\: \pi$$ are both just special numbers.
