Its short for 'sine'. This is a trigonometric function having to do with the ratio between the lengths of sides of a triangle.

 

 

Suppose you are driving up a hill. It's a steady incline, so for every mile you drive you rise a certain amount. The sine is the ratio of how much altitude you gain to how far you drive. There's a different sin for every angle. At angle 0, you gain no altitude per mile. At angle 90 you gain one mile of altitude for every mile you drive (actually, you'd be driving straight up, so you'd probably need a 4-wheel-drive car). But at every angle between there is some ratio, and you figure that out by multiplying how far you've driven by the sine of the angle.
