It is a number that cannot be written in the form p/q 

In other words it cannot be written exactly as a fraction.

This also means that it cannot be written exactly as a terminating or a recurring decimal.  The digits would keep going for ever and they would never form a pattern.

Examples or irrational numbers are

$$\pi,\;\;\sqrt3,\;\;e,\;\;5\sqrt7$$
