First you would change the mixed numbers into improrper fractions by multiplying the while number by the denominator and adding the product to the numerator, which in this case gets 74/9 and 7/3.

Next, you would get the two numbers to have the same denominator by finding the least common denominator (which is basically the first multiple that they have in common). These numbers have a LCD of the 9 since 3 is a multiple of 9, and so is 9.

You would next multiply each fraction by the LCD (multiplying both the numerator and denominator by it) and the problem becomes of like denominators (74/9 and 21/9). Since the problem was originally 8 2/9- 2 1/3, you would do 74/9- 21/9. If you don't know how, you just need to subtract the second numerator from the first. This gets 53/9.

Finally, you would simplify and find the highest amount of values of the denominator that go in the value of the numerator, in this case 9 goes in 53 five times. Subtract the number (the product of highest multiple of the denominator fitting in the numerator and the denominator) from the numerator and you would get a remaining fraction. This problem would get 5 and 8/9 left over. The answer is 5 8/9.
