what is the answer to a negative # + a negative #?

When adding a negative number to another negative number, your answer will be negative.

Examples:     - 6 + -4  =  -(6 + 4)  =  -10

                      -7 + -2  =  -(7 + 2)  =  -9

If you understand temperature then this should help.

 

On hot days the temprature is positive.

In the freezer, the tamperature is negaive.

 

So positive numbers are  'hot' numbers and negative numbers are 'cold' numbers.

 

You are in the freezer, so the temperature is neagative.

You introduce even more very cold air.  so you have     -temp + -temp = even colder temp that is a bigger negative number than what you had to start with.

 

-10+-8= -18

-10+-1 = -11
