What is the equation to figure out the total of this: A person gains 1 bushel for every 100 apples. Each consecutive bushel requires an additional number of apples, so that the bushel is 100x, where x equals the amount of bushels they have. She needs fifty bushels. How do you write that equation? Meaning, to pick one bushel she needs 100 apples. To pick 2 bushels she needs 200 additional apples, on top of the original 100. For 50 bushels, she needs 5000 apples in addition to the previous bushels of apples. 

 

So at 50 bushels, she needs to have picked 5000 apples and 4900 apples and 4800 apples and 4700 apples, all the way down to 100 apples for one bushel.

Well, it looks like a simple Arithmetic Series:

 

[F + L] x N/2 =Sum, where F=first term=100, L=Last term=5,000, N=number of terms=50

    [100 +5,000] x 50/2 =127,500 total sum of apples for 50 bushels.
