It should  be noted that you have assumed that the unknown side is the hypotenuse.

This may not be the case :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

a = 12cm,   b = 18cm   and   c = (8cm + Xcm)

             a2 + b2 = c2

            122 + 182 = c2                  

          144 + 324 = 468

            X = sqrt(468) - 8

            X = 13.63cm

I was aware of the fact that the unknown side could've been either the adjacent side, or the hypotenuse.
