If the equation is in the form:  y  =  mx + b  then  m is the slope  and  b is the y-intercept.

Let's take  4x + y  =  -5  and get the y-term alone on the left side by subtracting 4x from both sides:

--->                 y  =  -4x - 5

--->     slope = -4  and  y-intercept is -5
