what is the solution set for x^2-6x=8

x^2 - 6x  = 8      complete the square on x

x^2 - 6x + 9  =  8 + 9

(x - 3)^2  =  17     take both roots

x -  3  =   ±√17      add 3 to both sides

x  = 3 ±√17

It is about -1.88 and about 7.12
