 x^2 - 10x+8=0     subtract 8 from both sides

x^2 - 10x  = -8      take 1/2 the coefficient on x ,  (-10),  square it and add it to both sides

So (1/2)* (-10 ) =- 5     and  (-5)^2  = 25

x^2 - -10x + 25  = -8 + 25       simplify the right and factor the left side

(x  -  5)^2  = 17       take the square root of both sides

x - 5  =  ±√17         add 5 to both sides

x = 5 ±√17

And those are the two solutions....
