x6  =  x·x·x·x·x·x

x4  =  x·x·x·x

So:  x6 / x4  =  (x·x·x·x·x·x) / (x·x·x·x)  =  x·x  =  x²   (Cancelling out like factors)

Or:  you can subtract exponents:  x6 / x4  =  x6 - 4  =  x²
