What's -3 minus 1/4(1/8)? Like, negative 3 minus one-forth times one-eighth. So, you would have to multiply 4 and one-eighth to get an answer and then idk the rest.

Why would you want to convert it to an improper fraction Chris?

I think this question could be better demonstrated on a number line.

maybe I'll get up to organising  it one day!

the answer is just

$$-3\frac{1}{32}$$

So, we have

-3 - (1/4)(1/8)

Remember, we must carry out any multiplications before we carry out any subtractions. So, multiplying the two fractions together, we have

-3 - (1/32)

Note that this is the same thing as

- (3 + 1/32)

And converting the mixed number to an improper fraction, we have

- (97/32) = -97/32

And that's it.....

You could leave it as a mixed number.......I don't have any particular prejudices against either one!!!

I do.  I don't like improper fractions.  They are just not 'proper'.  lol

Have a look at how I wrote it using LaTex.  It is easy.  Give it a go, at least for fractions and indices.
