OK....so we have....

y/3+1/4=5/12       let's multiply through by common denominator or 3, 4 and 12 to clear the fractions....in this case...that would be 12....so we have

(12)y/3 + 12(1/4) = (12)(5/12)

4y + 3  = 5       subtract 3 from both sides

4y = 2              divide both sides by 4

y = 2 / 4   = 1 /2

And there you are......
