That formula is good for a square pyramid or a rectangular pyramid but what is it is a trianular pyramid or a circular pyramid (cone) or some other pyramid?
A general formula might be
$$volume=\frac{1}{3}\times \mbox{Area of base}\times \mbox{perpendicular height}$$
To work out the Volume of the Pyramid, the equation is listed below.
$${\mathtt{Volume}} = {\frac{\left({\mathtt{l}}{\mathtt{\,\times\,}}{\mathtt{w}}{\mathtt{\,\times\,}}{\mathtt{h}}\right)}{{\mathtt{3}}}}$$
