When finding an exact answer do you need to be in radians or degrees

either, it would depend on the question. 

Sometimes you are being asked to do it without a calculator.

I suppose if it is a straght calc answer degrees are more likely to be exact because there is exactly 360 degrees in a circle.

There are 2pi radians in a circle and this is irrational so radians are not going to be exact on a calculator.
